The Indian health scenario, at a first glance, is a dismal one. Across all HDI indicatiors, whether life expectance at birth, low-birth weight babies, neonatal mortality rate etc., India has consistently performed below the South-East Asian and global averages. Additionally, not only does India spend less than 5% of its GDP on healthcare, there is also a huge difference in expenditure between urban and rural areas. The Indian government has launched several schemes and missions, having allocated significant resources towards increasing access to health care. However, there are significant gaps in terms of both infrastructure and trained personnel.

Ashoka Fellows working in the field of health have recognised these gaps, and have been innovating towards addressing them in new, and effective ways. In the past months, we have been in close conversation with several of them, and have been introduced to several exciting developments and opportunities in the space. We hope to present these insights, reflections and critical commentary through this space. Ashoka Health will become a significant resource for anyone interested in innovations and ideas for the health space in the country today.
